Ni Hao 1 is the first level of the series and is designed for students who have no prior knowledge of the Chinese language. It is suitable for students in upper primary or lower secondary school. Chinese characters are used extensively throughout the text and are accompanied by pinyin which acts as a guide to pronunciation. Pinyin is gradually omitted as the student becomes familiar with the characters and vocabulary. This level is also quite suitable for adults who and have no prior knowledge of the language and are interested in learning Mandarin Chinese. Ni Hao 1 introduces more than 280 words and phrases and there are 84 characters to be learnt to write. Ni Hao 2 is the second level of the series and is ideally suited to students of around 13 to 15 years old in year 9 or 10 of junior high school. As in Ni Hao 1, Chinese characters are used extensively throughout the text and is accompanied by Pinyin which acts as a guide to pronunciation. Pinyin is gradually omitted as the student becomes familiar with the characters and vocabulary. Adults with some prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese may find this level more suitable than Ni Hao 1. This level introduces more than 440 words and phrases and there are 140 characters to be learnt to write. The textbook includes the Ni Hao Language Lab Textbook Edition CD-ROM. What’s New in the 3rd Edition? >The third edition of Ni Hao, Volume 2 offers a smooth transition from the introductory level to this elementary level, with a stronger focus on important sentence structures but a shorter vocabulary list. >The language introduced is more frequently and functionally repeated. Less frequently used words are taken off the text. Settings and illustrations are closely related to students’ daily life and are spiced with humor, with funny cartoons added for reinforcement learning. >There are two revision lessons for each end-semester sum up. A new section, About Pinyin and characters, expands students’ knowledge of pinyin rules and the origin of Chinese characters. >In the Workbook, exercises are now catered for individual sections in each lesson. New items introduced in each section are grouped for easy learning and handy referral. In addition to exercises, each lesson includes both the listening and reading tasks for summative learning and testing. Ni Hao 3 is the third level of the series and is designed for students who have completed Ni Hao 1 and Ni Hao 2. This level is ideally suited for students around 14 to 16 years old in year 10 or 11 of high school. As in other levels, Chinese characters are used extensively throughout the text and is accompanied by pinyin which acts as a guide to pronunciation and is gradually omitted as the student becomes familiar with the characters and vocabulary.

The third edition of Ni Hao 3 follows on from the third edition of Ni Hao 2. Teachers who started using the third edition of Ni Hao 2 have shown their strong approval. They expressed that the smooth transition between levels and the addition of the Pinyin-character column are of great help. The storylines of the texts and cartoons in the Textbook, and of the listening and reading passages in the Workbook are all enjoyable. The exercises in the Workbook, which now cater for individual sections in each lesson, work very well alongside the Textbook

This level introduces more than 500 words and phrases and there are 151 characters to be learnt to write.

Ni Hao 4 is the fourth level of the series and is designed for students around 15 to 17 years old in year 11 or 12 at high school. This 3rd edition is basically a reprint of the 2nd edition with minor alterations. This level introduces more than 440 words and phrases and there are 140 characters to be learnt to write. Topics include: holiday activities, friendship & family relationships >personalities, student leadership >extracurricular activities, school events >computers, internet, email, web sites >hospitality, social etiquette, impressions >eating & drinking habits, foods >student behavour, daily routine, environmental issues, places of interest part-time jobs etc >work environment – work place, boss, customers both good & bad shopping, fashion, decision making >boyfriend/girlfriend, personal judgement, parents opinion >peer pressure, social issues

Ni Hao 5 is a further advanced level to Ni Hao 4 and is the fifth and final stage in the series. It is suited to senior high school students in grade 12.

In this level Pinyin is no longer used on new characters. Students are encouraged to use their knowledge of the Chinese language to decipher words and meanings to prepare them for reading real life material.

Ni Hao 5 includes wider range of vocabulary, phrases and popular expressions to allow students to hold descriptive and detailed conversations, express their opinions on topical issues and communicate articulately in a range of common situations.
