Overview of Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture (YNSA)

YNSA is the brainchild of Dr Toshikatsu Yamamoto. Dr Yamamoto started developing his system in the late 1960. The first five points, named the Basic Points, were presented in 1973 at the 25th annual meeting of the Japanese Ryodoraku Society. For the next 12 years, these basic points were used successfully to treat patients with strokes. Over the years, more points were added and today it is one of the most successful acupuncture techniques used in the rehabilitation of neuro-musculoskeletal problems.

What is YNSA?

YNSA has been so named to distinguished it from Chinese Scalp Acupuncture, (CSA), the mapping of which reflects the cortical homunculus. The mapping of the YNSA acupoints evolved over time. Dr Yamamoto credited feedback from his patients that allowed him to detect and map his system.

YNSA is made up of the following groups:

1. Basic Points
2. Sensory Points
3. Cranial Nerves and Ypsilon Points
4. Somatotopes J and K, Is, Chest
5. Extra Points – Soleus
