About Yoann Birling, MMed, PhD
CLINICIAN | RESEARCHER | LECTURER
Yoann is a clinician, passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of his patient. In order to seek alternatives for people who suffer from chronic conditions, he left France at the age of 18 to seek medical knowledge in Beijing, China. He spent 10 years in China and was trained in the most reputed Chinese medicine university in China. Learning directly from clinical practice is primordial, and Yoann had the chance to follow some of the best clinicians in Beijing, including Hao Wanshan, Dong Zhenhua, Liu Qingguo, and Wang Yin.
During his training in China, Yoann completed more than 5.000 hours of clinical practice and treated hundreds of patients. This experience led him to have a broad understanding of the management of many conditions with Chinese medicine. Working in big hospitals in China was also a good opportunity to learn with conventional medicine doctors and open his perspectives. At 23 years old, he managed his own practice in Mulhouse, France. He obtained the Australian registration from the AHPRA in 2020.
As Chinese medicine views the person as a whole, every clinician is able to treat a wide range of medical conditions. However, Yoann has a special interest in mental health, which lead him to undergo a master’s degree in Beijing under the supervision of Wang Weidong, the academic leader of Chinese medicine psychology in China. During this degree, he was trained in the diagnosis and management of psychological disorders. Yoann is not a psychologist but was trained to use psychotherapy, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness and hypnosis.
Understanding the current challenges and limitations in medicine, Yoann is interested in research to test and improve existing treatments and finding new treatments to benefit the community. He has worked under different projects around psychological disorders in Beijing and obtained a scholarship in 2018 to undergo a PhD at Western Sydney University.
Yoann is passionate in translating the research into the clinical practice and sharing the scientific knowledge with the community. He is also teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students at Western Sydney University.
