In 2012 we hosted Eric Brand to teach two seminars on Chinese herbal medicine. This online course is from his second seminar.
This lecture explores current issues with Chinese herbs from the farm to the pharmacy. Herbal quality is influenced by many factors, such as production regions, differences in wild vs. cultivated products, and processing methods. This online course aims to provide a basic introduction to many of the key issues in herbal pharmacy, such as:
- Wild-crafted vs. cultivated products
- The concept of “dao di” medicinal materials- medicinal authenticity and the influence of proper growing regions, harvesting methods, and processing methods
- An overview on the various processing methods (pao zhi)
- Challenges in trade, including endangered species and commonly misidentified herbs
