Many acupuncturists see excellent results with acupuncture to assist fertility, but do not continue treatment during pregnancy. Practitioner issues include low confidence, patient safety concerns, scope of practice, complications during birth, as well as a general lack of awareness just how helpful acupuncture and the many other techniques of East Asian Medicine (EAM) can be throughout the entire perinatal period.

This workshop presents hands-on bodywork practice and patient handouts to support the full spectrum of pregnancy, birth and postnatal care, including but by not limited to acupuncture.

  • Day 1 covers the basic constitutional types and an overview of their characteristic challenges during pregnancy, labour and postpartum, and introduces the full ‘toolbox’ of techniques used to address those challenges.
  • Day 2 covers commonly occurring disorders of pregnancy and their associated therapeutic approaches, including office visits and sample patient handouts for home self-care.
  • Day 3 covers birth and postpartum care, along with additional time for discussion, review and practice of the bodywork techniques.
  • The afternoon of Day 3 will cover safe and ethical practice during pregnancy. There is also an option to attend just the Safe  & Ethical Practice component of the workshop (4 hours)

What you will learn

  • Understand the safety issues during pregnancy care, including contraindicated points, general cautions, and red flags for immediate referral.
  • Learn how to explain to patients and midwives how EAM may help for symptoms poorly treated in Western medicine, including threatened miscarriage, back and pelvic pain, severe nausea, itching, low and high fluid levels, breech presentation, preeclampsia, and small for-dates babies.
  • Learn a wide range of therapeutic methods for use in perinatal care, ranging from Qigong and lifestyle homework, to acupressure and bodywork, auriculotherapy, scalp and body acupuncture, and electrical stimulation.
  • Use EAM differential diagnosis to accurately focus labour preparation treatments on the most relevant constitutional imbalances, as well as identifying physical blockages to labour progress, and promoting dilatation and contractions as indicated.
  • Provide effective labour support to family members, with or without needles, and provide patients with constitutionally appropriate ‘care packages’ of acupressure, bodywork and exercises for birth.
  • Deliver helpful postpartum care, through office visits and/or home care instruction, including ‘Mother Warming’, Cesarean Section recovery, and full-spectrum approaches to challenges such as afterpains, lactation and mastitis, constipation, varicosities, and symphysis diastasis.
