Integrating Structural Assessment & Internal Medicine Using Applied Channel Theory with Jason Robertson

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
The seminar will utilise extensive hands-on practice to develop skills for using channel palpation to evaluate the interplay of structure and function in East Asian medicine. Major distal and local points will be presented and practiced for evaluating the feet, legs, pelvis, body trunk, thoracic/lumbar regions, ribcage, neck and head.
Students will learn how palpation and assessment of body alignment can allow for diagnostic refinement using a six-channel qi transformation (liù jīng qì huà) model. Dr. Robertson will draw from his clinical experience using these assessments and will describe clinical applications and needle technique.
Using channel palpation techniques developed in distal channel palpation, students will expand to palpate structures and muscles affecting the hips/pelvis, ribcage, vertebral column (including the front alarm and back transport points) and cervical region. Most importantly, palpation will continue to be used to shape patternbased diagnosis so that students can move beyond protocols and ‘magic points’ to a more embodied and dynamic practice style.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
Day 1: Foundations of Applied Channel Theory & Lower Body Palpation
• Core concepts in Applied Channel Theory: Review & summary
• Creating a diagnosis that merges form and function
• Review and practice of distal palpation techniques
• Palpation & diagnostic significance of points on the feet.
Day 2: Structural & Internal Medicine Integration
• Palpation & diagnostic significance of points on the lower leg, thighs
• Pelvic alignment – considering yin channel sinews, yang channel sinews and internal medicine
• Palpation of the posterior Taiyang channel internal medicine and back points
Day 3: Advanced Techniques & Integration
• Posterior shoulder palpation and the use of external plasters in internal medicine.
• Diagnostic points in the neck, head, and face.
• Demonstration and live treatment- bringing it all together
• Supervised practice of integrating structural palpation and internal medicine patterns
WHY SHOULD I ATTEND?
This three-day course will be limited to those who have taken a previous course in Applied Channel Theory taught either by Dr. Robertson or another apprentice of Dr. Wang Juyi.
There will be an assumption that core concepts have been studied in order to further develop palpation skills for improved clinical results in both internal medicine and musculoskeletal complaints. In fact, the course will demonstrate that many of these complaints are actually one in the same.
Attendees will come away with a deeper appreciation of the relationship of form and function from the perspective of East Asian medicine.
Instead of the tendency to separate structural/ musculoskeletal patterns from ‘internal medicine’, a framework for weaving the two will emerge. The result will be an approach to the clinic where something as common as iliotibial band tightness can give insight into a chronic sleep problem; or a tendency to constipation can help further improve results with shoulder pain.
In many cases, palpation of the channels provides a reliable supplement to other diagnostic techniques which then leads to innovative and effective treatments.

ABOUT JASON ROBERTSON
Dr. Jason D. Robertson (MS, DAHM) is the co-author of Applied Channel Theory in Chinese Medicine (Eastland Press, 2008) with his teacher Professor Wang Ju-yi (王居易). Dr. Robertson has studied Chinese language for 30 years and Chinese medicine in Chengdu and Beijing. He currently maintains a private practice in Seattle, WA and is a full-time faculty member at the Seattle Institute of East Asian Medicine (www.sieam.edu). Dr. Robertson has taught courses on channel theory and diagnosis around the world and has been recognized by the Beijing Administration of Chinese Medicine as an official apprentice of Wang Juyi.
