ABOUT THIS WEBINAR

This webinar gives acupuncture and TCM practitioners a practical framework for supporting women through perimenopause and menopause.

It begins with why menopause has become such a prominent topic: women having children later, IVF, changes in the food supply, and the midlife pile-up of teenage children, ageing parents and work. It then clarifies the terminology and the stages of reproductive ageing.

From there it moves into the clinic. You will learn how Liver patterns guide treatment, especially in early perimenopause, how to distinguish them from Kidney Yin deficiency, and why treating the Shen and supporting the Earth matter so much. The session also explains why midlife women are often ideal long-term clients who get real value from acupuncture’s whole-body, individualised approach.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Define the stages of reproductive ageing. Distinguish between perimenopause, menopause, post-menopause, and medical or surgical menopause, and explain how the direction of flow from the Heart to the Uterus (via the Bao Luo/Chong Mai) reverses during the transition.
  2. Use Liver patterns to guide treatment and conversations about HRT/MHT. Spot signs of “excess oestrogen” and low progesterone in women in their 40s: suddenly painful periods, heavy bleeding, short cycles, or a history of endometriosis or adenomyosis. Understand why added oestrogen can worsen these patterns.
  3. Distinguish Liver patterns from Kidney Yin deficiency. Recognise the “textbook” overheating client, who often responds quickly to formulas such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan, and support her with TCM lifestyle advice so the gains last.
  4. Use Shen and Earth support in practice. Use storytelling and education to frame grief and “letting go” as a useful part of the transition. Use food therapy, and build working relationships with nutritionists and other practitioners.

CLINICAL POINTS COVERED

  • Cycles of 7 and the “Golden Opportunity”. Present the transition as a valuable season of life that builds an older, stronger self, while still taking her discomfort seriously. Postpartum, menstruation and perimenopause lay the foundation for the years that follow.
  • Educate, don’t take a side. You do not need to be “pro or anti medication”. Explain what the Liver picture shows and let her decide.
  • Progesterone and IUDs. Bio-identical progesterone can help, but the progestin in a hormonal IUD is not progesterone.
  • Kidney Yin clients overspend their energy. As soon as they feel better they “go out and spend it”, so lifestyle support is key. Look after them well and they can be clients for life.
  • Shen is bigger than we realise. Our culture does not respect healthy grieving. You do not need to be a counsellor (refer on when needed), and treatment itself supports the transformation.
  • The basics are not basic. Many women of this generation have a complicated relationship with food. Watch the Stomach pulse, especially in clients taking GLP-1 medications.
  • Why women need you. Acupuncture can treat several overlapping symptoms at once, offers a non-drug option, calms the nervous system, and gives women time and validation that short medical appointments often cannot. Satisfied midlife women also refer their friends.
