Acupuncture Point Combinations to treat Mental and Emotional Disorders A Practical Workshop with David Hartmann

Course Outline

From experience, when a Chinese medicine practitioner searches for content on how to treat complicated mental and emotional disorders, two key things occur. The first, is that there is a significant lack of content; the second, is that the content available is too foundational. Let me ask you a question here: how many patients have you seen in your clinic present with anger as their main complaint? Or grief, fear or joy? In fact, how often do you see any of the seven main emotions as primary patient complaints? I have been in practice since 1993 and treating mental health is my special interest (can’t say speciality 😉), and I rarely see patients that present with one of the seven main emotions as their primary complaint. Our patient’s mental health is usually quite complicated, therefore you need to think ‘outside the box’ when constructing acupuncture point combinations.

In this workshop we will analyse and discuss acupuncture point combinations for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), self-esteem issues, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), phobias, panic attacks, hypervigilance, addictions, and even sympathy/empathy.

These acupuncture point combinations will come from a range of different Chinese medicine systems, including, but not limited to, Zàng Fǔ Patterns, Five Elements, Five Spirits or Eight Extraordinary Vessels. So, if you want a course that gives you content that is almost impossible to find, especially for the disorders discussed, look no further. I am super excited to share my knowledge, clinical experience and my favourite acupuncture point combinations for the different mental and emotional disorders.

So, what will you learn?
In this two-day workshop you will be taken through a range of different acupuncture point combinations to treat mental and emotional disorders. The goal being that you are provided with additional treatment options to consider for your patients. More tools for the toolbox as it were. Tools you can apply in clinic immediately!

See below for a larger snapshot of each days acupuncture point combinations.

The Seven Emotions (Qī Qíng/七情) According to Chinese Medicine (Foundational)
In this free workshop (included) participants will get a foundational look at the seven emotions (Qī Qíng/七情). This will include a very brief history before discussing each of the seven emotions which are anger, joy, pensiveness, worry, sadness/grief, fear and shock. Part of the discussion will include organ and element relationships, diagnosis and acupuncture point combinations used to treat. The workshop will conclude with an introduction to David’s future workshops, courses and textbook on mental health conditions separate to/including the seven emotions.

At the end of this workshop, you will:

  • Be more proficient in identifying the different types of mental and emotional disorders seen in clinic.
  • Understand the various forms of diagnoses that can apply for each of the mental and emotional disorders; and then how to treat those disorders.
  • Have a greater insight into the importance of acupuncture point combinations.
  • Feel like you now have the tools to construct your own acupuncture point combinations for mental and emotional disorders.
  • Have been taken through Chinese medicine concepts that are new to you; something you had forgotten you knew and are therefore reminded of again; or for consolidating knowledge already known.
  • Have a better understanding of a range of different Chinese medicine/philosophy concepts that tie in with the treatment of patients with mental and emotional disorders.
