Children and teenagers experiences anxiety and depression in a different ways and it is up to us to be able to identify those nuances to provide the best treatment. As Xu Dachun puts it, ‘Illnesses may be identical but the people who have them are different’.
The rates of anxiety and depression amongst children and teenagers have been increasing exponentially over the past few years. These disorders had become even more prevalent during the COVID-19 era, so it is essential that we are ready to help them at a moment’s notice. The way we handle mental healthcare treatments with children and adolescents, as allied health practitioner should take a more delicate and sensitive approach that certainly requires further training to develop the appropriate tools and right knowledge.
Acupuncture has been found to be extremely effective towards treating anxiety and depression, and when applied correctly it is a well-tolerated and enjoyable therapeutic modality for children that can help turn their lives around without the need for medication, this is on the proviso that the rationale and techniques used are appropriate for the child

About Rebecca Avern
Rebecca Avern has treated children with acupuncture for over 20 years, and now treats exclusively children and teenagers. She founded and runs two children’s acupuncture clinics in Oxford, UK, one of which offers affordable acupuncture to children and the opportunity for practitioner internships. She is passionate about supporting practitioners to treat children and making treatment accessible to as many children as possible.
Rebecca has been a senior faculty member, teacher and clinical supervisor at the prestigious College of Integrated Chinese Medicine (CICM) in the UK for over 15 years.
She is the author of the textbook Acupuncture for Babies, Children and Teenagers and also of Chinese Medicine for Childhood Anxiety and Depression. She teaches paediatrics in the UK, online and internationally.
Rebecca is also the founder of the Hub of Paediatric Acupuncture – an online community for paediatric acupuncturists (www.paediatricacupuncture.com).
