Our sleep cycles\, hormonal levels and mental states are all affected by cyclical rhythms. \nDr. Sonia F. Tan discusses the connection between channels\, acupoints points and the rhythms of our body and nature. With this knowledge\, different points will be more effective at various times of the day and during various seasons. With the blessings of fellow senior students to pass on the Balance Method legacy\, Dr. Sonia Tan developed and created the very first Balance Method/System Acupuncture Certificate program at an accredited public post-secondary institution–Langara College –launched in 2018. Throughout her career\, she has been deeply involved in acupuncture education\, as lecturer\, tutor\, mentor and examiner. \nYNSA started as a chance encounter with Dr Toshikatsu Yamamoto in Vienna in 2000 and since then became a direct disciple for over 23 years with Dr Yamamoto along with being a close friend.   \nIn 2004\, Dr Teo\, as Chair of Education\, AMAC\, invited Dr Yamamoto to run the first YNSA workshop in Australia\, at the ICMART Congress in Sydney Australia. Dr Yamamoto has over the years conducted six workshops in Sydney\, Perth\, and in 2017\, a workshop in Brisbane. Dr Teo has also conducted a series of YNSA workshops in Australia across several states and has mentored students from these courses. More recently\, she has also conducted YNSA workshops overseas. \nDr Emily Teo runs a full time acupuncture practice in Australia\, with YNSA as the main technique offered. To keep up to date with the latest developments in YNSA\, Dr Teo attends yearly workshops conducted by Dr Yamamoto in Miyazaki\, Japan. \n  \nYNSA Workshop – Dr Emily Teo: A Review By Kerry Carmody\, Acupuncturist\nYamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture (YNSA)\, is a sub-specialty of acupuncture treatment that was developed since the 1970’s by a Japanese physician Dr Toshikatsu Yamamoto. While it is a relatively late arrival into the repertoire of TCM acupuncture in Australia it has been well received in the U.S.A. and Europe over the past several decades. \nThe clinical efficacy of YNSA is particularly apparent in treating musculo-skeletal problems and injuries. Notably the patient can provide immediate feedback in the course of the treatment enabling you to modify your technique if required\, to achieve better results. As a considerable proportion of patients are seeking treatment for painful conditions of various kinds\, YNSA provides a direct pathway to successful outcomes. \nHowever the range of applications goes well beyond this\, being applicable to complex neurological conditions such as peripheral neuropathy\, Parkinson’s syndrome and stroke recovery. It is also particularly useful in an aging population to minimise the risk of falling. \nA sound understanding of the basics is essential\, and requires a degree of application and commitment. However the theoretical basis of the system is relatively straightforward. \nThe basics points (A to I) cover the musculoskeletal system and their associated nerves. With these\, most relatively straight-forward cases can be treated successfully. The sensory points treat all reversible conditions associated with the sensory organs. Ding Jiwan (grandson of Ding Ganren of Wen Bing fame) taught this method to Dr. Shen in Shanghai and then Hong Kong during the turbulent years of 1937-1942. Dr. Shen as the sole survivor of World War 2 with knowledge of the pulse method\, fled the Communist Revolution in China for the USA. \n​Dr. Hammer\, a renowned practitioner\, first encountered Dr. Shen’s exceptional diagnostic skills in a Chinatown clinic in New York City during the early 1970s. This serendipitous meeting led to an eight-year apprenticeship for Dr. Hammer under Dr. Shen’s guidance\, and their collaboration spanned thirty years\, during which they recorded and refined the Menghe pulse method. \nThe Shen-Hammer Pulse method has evolved from Classical Chinese medicine theory. It recognizes that the range of energy transformations within a human body reflects the infinite combination of spatial and temporal energy possibilities in the macrocosm. The pulse carries information encoded within it\, representing the physiological exchanges specific to that individual organism. \nPalpating the radial artery allows us to decipher these exchanges and provides rich and extensive diagnostic information. The pulse describes the inherited life of a person\, their current state of being\, and can indicate possible health trajectories for the future. \nOnce the information encoded in the pulse is deciphered\, it guides the practitioner to skilfully implement management strategies. These strategies may include acupuncture\, Chinese herbs\, and lifestyle modifications to positively impact the physical and psycho-emotional potential of the clients.​ \nThe Shen-Hammer Pulse method is a refined and comprehensive approach to pulse diagnosis that draws upon ancient Chinese medicine theory. It allows practitioners to gain valuable insights into their clients’ health and guide them towards appropriate treatment strategies to enhance their well-being. \n  \n\n             \n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Karen Bilton (PhD)\nKaren started her career in healthcare as a physiotherapist. She has been practising acupuncture and Chinese medicine for 28 years and is licensed to practise in Australia and the USA. Having worked in the USA for 15 years she has been studying with Dr Leon Hammer\, MD since 1997. She completed doctoral studies evaluating the reliability of practitioners applying Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis clinically. Karen is one of a handful of people who inherited this pulse method and model of developmental psychological model directly from Dr Hammer. \nShe is co-author of a Handbook of Contemporary Chinese Pulse Diagnosis; taught Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis classes as well as presented at conferences in China\, USA\, Australia\, and New Zealand; and has published her work in peer review journals. By clearing trauma and reducing the charge of a particular belief system\, it is possible to prevent passing the trauma on to future generations.  Western medical research in epigenetics has shown that memories and traumatic experiences can be transferred up to five generations. In Chinese medicine\, the Jing contains the genetic information\, and this can be passed on to succeeding generations.  \nAttitudes\, personality\, emotional make-up\, and belief systems are all part of the Jing that is inherited. Strengths and imbalances are passed on. The imbalances can be corrected with Chinese medicine to prevent them from continuing in a patient’s offspring. SUMMARY:Channel Palpation and Diagnosis: An Exploration of Classical Acupuncture Techniques with Jason D. Robertson
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\n\nCourse Outline\nChannel examination is a classical diagnostic technique not often taught in modern acupuncture schools. Emphasised in the earliest acupuncture texts (Nei Jing/Nan Jing)\, observation and palpation of the channels is extremely helpful for confirming diagnosis\, refining point selection and improving clinical results. This three-day class will focus on learning and applying channel diagnosis through interactive lectures and extensive hands-on practice of technique. In addition\, an exploration of channel-based physiology will be presented from the text Applied Channel Theory in Chinese Medicine (Eastland Press\, Seattle 2008). Students will leave with a greater understanding of classical physiology and diagnostic techniques for evaluating pathological patterns in both internal conditions and musculoskeletal complaints. \n  \nApplied Channel Theory\nApplied Channel Theory (jīng luò yī xué) is an approach to acupuncture rooted in the dual research threads of classical texts and modern clinical application. Developed by Dr. Wang Ju–Yi over 50 years in Beijing clinics\, hospitals and research institutes\, it involves the rigorous combination of theory and diagnostic technique. More precisely\, Applied Channel Theory requires that examination of acupuncture channels be considered in the broader context of other diagnostic tools. In addition to channel examination\, Applied Channel Theory is a comprehensive system that includes channel theory (channel qi transformation)\, channel differentiation\, channel selection\, the nature of acupuncture points\, point selection and location\, and various methods of channel regulation (like acupuncture\, moxibustion\, hand techniques\, cupping and so on). This lost art has been brought back to modern practice by Dr Wang’s teachings and introduced to the Western world through Jason Robertson’s best selling title Applied Channel Theory in Chinese medicine: Wang Ju-Yi’s Lectures on Channel Therapeutics. Attendees will be taught the fundamental techniques of channel examination\, palpation and diagnosis in this practical workshop. \n \n  \nWhat You Will Learn\n\nAn introduction to Applied Channel Theory (jīng luò yī xué). This will begin with an overview of the classical conception of the channels based on the life work of Beijing Professor Wang Ju-Yi. An understanding of the physical location and function of the channels will underpin our exploration of clinical strategy. This will include a discussion of physiology from the perspective of ‘channels’ as six subcategories of homeostasis.\nEach day will also include practice of channel examination. Hands-on demonstration and practice with feedback from the instructor will be extensive. Students will develop skills for gleaning diagnostic information from careful palpation of the distal channels. Much like tongue observation and pulse diagnosis\, channel examination can be crucial for determining patterns of disharmony (zhèng).\nBuilding on basic techniques\, discussions of channel-based physiological models will expand to include discussions of how pathology can manifest specific\, palpable changes on the acupuncture channels. Specific points will be considered including demonstrations of precise point location and discussions of common findings and their possible diagnostic significance.\n\n  \nAbout Jason D. Robertson\n \nDr. Jason D. Robertson (MS\, DAHM) is the coauthor of Applied Channel Theory in Chinese Medicine: Wang Ju-Yi’s Lectures on Channel Therapeutics (Eastland Press\, 2008) with his teacher Professor Wang Ju-Yi. Dr. Robertson has studied Chinese language for 30 years and Chinese medicine in Chengdu and Beijing. It is accurate to say that numerology was created in Greece whereas\, China created Chinese medicine. It is also accurate to say that Greece and China had little\, or nothing\, to do with one another when numerology was created\, in the middle 500’s BCE. \nChinese medicine and philosophy\, as you probably know\, involves a lot of numbers. The Three Powers\, Four Levels\, Five Elements\, Six Divisions\, Seven Emotions\, are just some of the myriads of systems in Chinese medicine that use numbers to define them. \nNumerology does likewise as it attempts to explain each person’s archetype. For the most part there are 9 numbers in this archetype system. Of these 9 numerology numbers\, there are ‘Ruling’ or ‘LifePath’ numbers. There are ‘Personal Year’ numbers; and the numbers of your date of birth can also provide you with the ‘Arrows of Pythagoras’. What is interesting here\, is that a lot of these numbers point towards a relationship with the Chinese medicine organ system. That being the case\, you can use specific acupuncture point combinations to treat a patient within their numerology numbers and arrows. \nIf you are interested in learning archetype systems that can help you understand your patients more\, then this is the workshop for you.
