SUMMARY:Balance System Acupuncture Foundations: Levels 1 & 2 with Dr. Sonia F. Tan
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nWORKSHOP OVERVIEW\nThis 3 day course provides knowledge and skills of the basic Foundations of Balance System Acupuncture (BSA)\, Level 1: Single System Balance and Level 2: Multiple/Global System Balance. \nIn part one\, learn the basic structures of the five main systems of Balance System Acupuncture\, an evolution of the Balance Method. The systems are rooted in the concept of healing the body by balancing channels. Students will learn the history of the Balance Method/System\, the basis of each of the Five Systems\, and the logical processes for determining the channels to acupuncture\, including an easy-to-use format to outline the treatment plan. A detailed explanation of the Mirroring and Imaging Formats will also be explained to assist participants in effective point selection. Dr. Tan will show how to use distal points in order to avoid aggravating the area of discomfort and will include demonstrations. Particular attention will be paid to musculo-skeletal conditions in this introductory level. \nPart two expands on the basic principles taught in the Single Systems: Balance System of Acupuncture Level I. This class will discuss treatment of functional and internal disorders and how to treat them with multiple systems of the Balance System of Acupuncture. Students will expand on the knowledge from Level I\, extending their clinical reach from musculoskeletal (MSK)\, orthopedics and pain\, to treating internal medicine disorders\, including the discussion of complicated cases that include both MSK pain and functional internal disorders. The mirror and imaging format will be further discussed and how it is used in clinical practice to treat internal issues and body pain. Advanced treatments will be discussed for use in clinic such as an Eight-Meridian combo for gynecological issues. A Four-Meridian will also be discussed as a treatment strategy to treat bronchial disorders\, cardiology symptoms\, digestive disorders and urogenital diseases. Major distal and local points will be presented and practiced for evaluating the feet\, legs\, pelvis\, body trunk\, thoracic/lumbar regions\, ribcage\, neck and head. \nStudents will learn how palpation and assessment of body alignment can allow for diagnostic refinement using a six-channel qi transformation (liù jīng qì huà) model. Emphasized in the earliest acupuncture texts (Nei Jing/Nan Jing)\, observation and palpation of the channels is extremely helpful for confirming diagnosis\, refining point selection and improving clinical results. \nThis three-day class will focus on learning and applying channel diagnosis through interactive lectures and extensive hands-on practice of technique. In addition\, an exploration of channel-based physiology will be presented from the text Applied Channel Theory in Chinese Medicine (Eastland Press\, Seattle 2008). Students will leave with a greater understanding of classical physiology and diagnostic techniques for evaluating pathological patterns in both internal conditions and musculoskeletal complaints. \n \nWHAT YOU’LL LEARN\n– An introduction to Applied Channel Theory (經絡醫學 jīng luò yī xué). SUMMARY:Treating Peripheral Neuropathy & Geriatrics Effectively With Acupuncture with Matthew Bauer

While advancements in public health policies\, nutrition\, and medicine have extended average life spans\, these very advancements seem ill-prepared to deal with the health challenges our elders often face. Acupuncture’s ability to promote natural healing and enhance quality of life can provide safe and effective care for a particularly vulnerable population. \nSaturday’s lesson will first cover special considerations for geriatric populations including: \n\nThe tendency toward overall qi and jing deficiencies\nNeedle gauge and needling depth\nThe role of touch therapy\nEfective communication\nNavigating multiple medication use\n\nThe remainder of Saturday’s training will place a special emphasis treating peripheral neuropathy including those involved with diabetes\, chemotherapy\, and idiopathic (of unknown origin). SUMMARY:Daoist Ways Of Enhancing Vitality with Livia Kohn
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \n \nWORKSHOP OVERVIEW\nVitality in Daoism is a function of vital energy or qi\, notably the smoothness and harmony of its flow. Various methods serve to enhance this\, creating a stronger level of health\, a greater sense of well-being\, and an extension of youthful living. \nAfter an introductory discussion of the nature and workings of qi on Saturday morning\, starting at 9:30\, the workshop presents a series of different methods that serve to enhance the quality and power of qi. For the remainder of Saturday\, we focus on opening the energy flow by learning about and engaging in breathing practices\, healing exercises\, and internal qi-guiding. DESCRIPTION:Register Now\nCourse Outline\nFrom experience\, when a Chinese medicine practitioner searches for content on how to treat complicated mental and emotional disorders\, two key things occur. The first\, is that there is a significant lack of content; the second\, is that the content available is too foundational. Let me ask you a question here: how many patients have you seen in your clinic present with anger as their main complaint? Or grief\, fear or joy? In fact\, how often do you see any of the seven main emotions as primary patient complaints? I have been in practice since 1993 and treating mental health is my special interest (can’t say speciality 😉)\, and I rarely see patients that present with one of the seven main emotions as their primary complaint. Our patient’s mental health is usually quite complicated\, therefore you need to think ‘outside the box’ when constructing acupuncture point combinations. \nIn this workshop we will analyse and discuss acupuncture point combinations for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)\, self-esteem issues\, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)\, phobias\, panic attacks\, hypervigilance\, addictions\, and even sympathy/empathy. \nThese acupuncture point combinations will come from a range of different Chinese medicine systems\, including\, but not limited to\, Zàng Fǔ Patterns\, Five Elements\, Five Spirits or Eight Extraordinary Vessels. Ding Jiwan (grandson of Ding Ganren of Wen Bing fame) taught this method to Dr. Shen in Shanghai and then Hong Kong during the turbulent years of 1937-1942. Dr. Shen as the sole survivor of World War 2 with knowledge of the pulse method\, fled the Communist Revolution in China for the USA. \n​Dr. Hammer\, a renowned practitioner\, first encountered Dr. Shen’s exceptional diagnostic skills in a Chinatown clinic in New York City during the early 1970s. This serendipitous meeting led to an eight-year apprenticeship for Dr. Hammer under Dr. Shen’s guidance\, and their collaboration spanned thirty years\, during which they recorded and refined the Menghe pulse method. \nThe Shen-Hammer Pulse method has evolved from Classical Chinese medicine theory. It recognizes that the range of energy transformations within a human body reflects the infinite combination of spatial and temporal energy possibilities in the macrocosm. DESCRIPTION:Register Now\nUsing Chinese Medicine to treat male infertility (fighting “Spermageddon”) with Dr. Olivia Pojer\, MD(AUT) \nCourse Description\nOn average one out of 6 couples experience infertility\, defined as one or two year of unsuccessful attempts of trying to conceive a baby. Due to this fact\, the fertility clinics popularity is increasing. Talking statistically\, in every Western world classroom there is at least one pupil that was fathered with the help of assisted reproduction. Looking at the reasons of unfulfilled parenthood\, 40% are female issues and 40% are male issues. \nInterestingly our society as well as our medicine (both conventional but also Chinese Medicine) focus quite exclusively on treating the female part of the childless couple. Thus the percentage of male issues for infertility-the so called male factor- is the same as the female one\, treating the male partner is very underrepresented. \nDespite the fact that the seminal quality has declined within the last 30 years by more than 60%\, it downgraded so dramatically that the WHO had to correct and adapt the standard value for the semen analyses in 2010 and 2021 to make sure that one could get non-pathological semen analyses results at all. On top of that the male factor plays an important role in early pregnancy loss and should be treated in any case to prevent abortion. \nIn this seminar\, we will extensively examine the obligatory treatment of the male factor as well\, whenever an infertile couple enters the Chinese Medicine office in future. \nTo enable participants to treat their male fertility patients properly\, there will be an introduction on andrology from a biomedicine perspective\, talk about research-based causes of infertility\, diagnostics and the limitation of the treatment with conventional medicine which will need be examined and discussed.  Biomedicine knowledge is essential to understand how sperm is produced and what can damage its proper development to apply the best treatment to help. Dr Yamamoto has over the years conducted six workshops in Sydney\, Perth\, and in 2017\, a workshop in Brisbane. Dr Teo has also conducted a series of YNSA workshops in Australia across several states and has mentored students from these courses. More recently\, she has also conducted YNSA workshops overseas. \nDr Emily Teo runs a full time acupuncture practice in Australia\, with YNSA as the main technique offered. While it is a relatively late arrival into the repertoire of TCM acupuncture in Australia it has been well received in the U.S.A. and Europe over the past several decades. \nThe clinical efficacy of YNSA is particularly apparent in treating musculo-skeletal problems and injuries. Notably the patient can provide immediate feedback in the course of the treatment enabling you to modify your technique if required\, to achieve better results. As a considerable proportion of patients are seeking treatment for painful conditions of various kinds\, YNSA provides a direct pathway to successful outcomes. \nHowever the range of applications goes well beyond this\, being applicable to complex neurological conditions such as peripheral neuropathy\, Parkinson’s syndrome and stroke recovery. It is also particularly useful in an aging population to minimise the risk of falling. \nA sound understanding of the basics is essential\, and requires a degree of application and commitment.
